Its goal was to stop the process of new reforms, called "Prague Spring". It began on January 5, 1968, then the country was led by Alexander Dubček. The Prague Spring reforms were Dubček's attempts to grant additional rights to his people, to carry out partial decentralization of the economy and democratization of the country. People wanted to change the existing way of life through democratic freedoms, including easing restrictions on the media, freedom of speech and freedom of movement. And on the night of August 21, troops broke into Prague, including 7 thousand tanks... Thus began the special operation "Danube"... Within 36 hours, full control over Czechoslovakia was restored... The Soviet grouping of troops (up to 130 thousand people) remained here until 1991... And during the street protests, about a hundred people were shot, hundreds were injured. The nation was swept by a large wave of emigration - people fled the country... Dozens of people in different countries - including the former socialist camp, openly protested or disagreed with the invasion of Czechoslovakia. Demonstration on August 25, 1968, called "demonstration of the seven", - one of the most significant actions of Soviet dissidents, was held on Red Square in Moscow. All the same, there were honest and courageous people at that time, despite the fact that Protestants were expelled from the CPSU, fired from their jobs, etc. One of these was the poet of the sixties - Yevgeny Yevtushenko, which can be called the voice of Russia's conscience. On August 23, 1968, he wrote the poem "Tanks are moving in Prague", in which he laid out all the heartache, which every honest Russian person experienced then... Years have passed, but today we are convinced: evil was not eradicated, it reared its head again and is trying to destroy freedom again - already in my country... In Ukraine... Tanks are moving in Prague in the scarlet blood of dawn. Tanks march in truth which is not a newspaper. Tanks follow the temptations to live not in the power of stamps. Tanks go over the soldiers, sitting inside these tanks. My God, how disgusting ! God - what a fall ! Tanks are moving along Jan Hus, Pushkin and Petofi. Fear is the basis of rudeness. Okhotnoryadsky muzzles, you are a mixture of Nozdrev and the Man in the Case. You have violated conscience and honor. A monster rides belly in tanks-cases in Prague fear armored with rudeness. What to understand about motives motorized whip? You hear, naive Manilov, Nozdryov's grip on the throat? Tanks go through the crypts, Tanks go over those that have not yet been born.
