Dail Debate: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2020
Dail Debate: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2020 1st December 2020 Key comments from today’s Dáil debate... Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue TD (Fianna Fail, Donegal): Comments directed at Holly Cairns TD by a board member of Greyhound Racing Ireland were "SIMPLY UNACCEPTABLE" Holly Cairns TD (Social Democrats, Cork South-West): "Scandalous and indefensible": Deputy Cairns highlighted the frightening levels of cruelty in greyhound racing and emphasised that the government should not be propping it up. She said there was "no excuse" for comments made by a board member of Greyhound Racing Ireland/Irish Greyhound Board, Wayne McCarthy, which referred to her as “an ignorant little girl”. Gino Kenny TD (Solidarity - People Before Profit, Dublin Mid-West): Dire animal welfare in greyhound racing. It should not be tolerated Mick Barry TD (Solidarity, Cork North-Central): 6,000 dogs are culled every year because they can't race at the levels owners want. Animal cruelty is inherent. The industry is going down. Alan Kelly TD (Labour, Tipperary): Comment made about Holly Cairns TD by a board member of Greyhound Racing Ireland was "ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL". Labour Party will be supporting this funding. Greyhound racing isn't an industry - it's a hobby. I don't have confidence in the Irish Greyhound Board. Matt Carthy TD (Sinn Fein, Cavan Monaghan): Sinn Fein supports funding of greyhound racing fund but opposes €2.4 million increase in funding. Barry Cowen TD (Fianna Fail, Offaly) 16 greyhound tracks around Ireland are not sustainable. The future of cruel greyhound racing should be protected Danny Healy Rae TD (Ind, Kerry) Greyhound racing is "a worthwhile industry" Among the other TDs speaking in support of the €96,000,000 in funding for horse and greyhound racing were Richard Donoghue TD (Ind, Limerick), Mattie McGrath (Ind, Tipperary) and Matt Shanahan TD (Ind, Waterford).
