The ancient portrait of sons and daughters of Yaroslav the Wise in the Kyiv's Sophia Cathedral Sons: Volodymyr and Izyaslav (figures with candles), Svyatoslav , Vsevolod (the youngest one in the portrait) Daughters: Anna, Anastasia, Elizabeth and Agatha (the youngest one in the portrait) Audio "Lost In Prayer" by Doug Maxwell Video by Shap2001 Studio July 23, 2022 More than a thousand years have passed since the date of the first service in St. Sophia Cathedral, but disputes over the group portrait of the sons and daughters of Yaroslav the Wise still do not subside. By 1651, the central arch depicting the main participants in the composition was lost. In the center of the lost composition was Christ. To the left and to the right of him were depicted Yaroslav the Wise with a model of the cathedral in his hands and his wife Irina. It is possible that Saint Volodymyr and his wife Olga stood even closer to the central figure on the left and right. The remaining part was sketched in 1651 by the Dutch painter Abraham van Westerveld. Thanks to this sketch, we know for sure that the four figures on the arch at the entrance on the left are men, and the four figures on the arch on the right are women. Over time, after subsequent drawings and updates, the male figures took on the appearance of female figures. On the Abraham van Westerveld sketch, for clarity, I signed the names of the sons and daughters of Yaroslav the Wise. Characters are taken in parentheses, whose image has not been preserved.
