The Aurora Borealis (Polar Lights)
(W(В)) Polar lights, northern lights (Aurora Borealis), southern lights (Aurora Australis), aurora (Aurora), ustara. "pazori" - glow (luminescence) of the upper atmospheres of planets that have a magnetosphere, due to their interaction with charged particles of the solar wind. In a very limited area of the upper atmosphere auroras can be caused by low-energy charged solar wind particles entering the polar ionosphere through the northern and southern polar caspahs. In the northern hemisphere, auroras can be observed over Spitsbergen during midday hours. When energetic particles of the plasma layer collide with the upper atmosphere, the atoms and molecules of the gases that make up it are excited. Radiation of excited atoms in visible range is observed as aurora borealis. Spectra of polar lights depend on the composition of atmospheres of planets: for example, if for the Earth the brightest are the emission lines of excited atoms of oxygen and nitrogen in the visible range, for Jupiter - the emission lines of hydrogen in the ultraviolet. Since ionization by charged particles occurs most effectively at the end of the particle's path and atmospheric density decreases with increasing altitude in accordance with the barometric formula, the height of appearance of auroras depends strongly enough on the parameters of the planet's atmosphere, so, for Earth with its rather complex composition of atmosphere red glow of oxygen is observed at heights of 200-400 km, and joint glow of nitrogen and oxygen - at a height of ~110 km. In addition, these factors also determine the form of auroras - blurred upper and rather sharp lower boundaries. In the spectrum of auroras of the Earth most intense radiation of main components of atmosphere - nitrogen and oxygen; their emission lines are observed both in atomic and molecular (neutral molecules and molecular ions) states. The most intense are the emission lines of atomic oxygen and ionized nitrogen molecules. Oxygen glow is due to emission of excited atoms in metastable states with wavelengths of 557.7 nm (green line, lifetime 0.74 s) and a doublet of 630 and 636.4 nm (red region, lifetime 110 s). As a consequence, the red doublet is emitted at heights of 150-400 km, where due to high atmospheric rarefaction rates of excited states during collisions are low. Ionized nitrogen molecules emit at wavelengths of 391.4 nm (near ultraviolet), 427.8 nm (violet), and 522.8 nm (green). However, each phenomenon has its own unique gamut due to the variability of atmospheric chemistry and weather factors.
