About the Constellation Scutum, also known as Scutum Sobiescianum (Latin for "Sobieski's Shield"), catalog designation Scutum, is a small constellation located in the southern celestial hemisphere near the celestial equator, between the constellations Aquila (Eagle), Serpens Cauda (Serpent's Tail), and Sagittarius (Archer). It lies at an average distance of approximately 1,000–10,000 light-years from Earth, as its stars are situated within the dense plane of the Milky Way. The constellation was created in 1683 by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius and is the only modern constellation named after a historical figure who was not an astronomer – King John III Sobieski of Poland. Scutum is the fifth-smallest constellation in the night sky, occupying only 109 square degrees (84th place in size), yet it contains some of the richest star fields and deep-sky objects in the entire Milky Way. Despite its modest area, this celestial region is home to one of the most massive known stars – the red hypergiant UY Scuti – as well as the famous open cluster Messier 11, known as the "Wild Duck Cluster." ——— О созвездии Щит, также известный как Щит Собеского (лат.
